Kashmir Converted Into World’s Largest
Prison: Curfew Victims Stories Of
Terror |
|
|
|
August 27, 2008 After being witness to
unprecedented pro-liberation demonstrations
for almost two months, Kashmir appeared to
have been converted into largest prisons
across the world with hardly any Kashmiri soul
visible anywhere.
With the imposition of curfew, the occupied
territory presented the look of a virtual
graveyard that would make it hard to believe
for any one that it had been agog with
resounding pro-freedom slogans by people of
all ages and hues only last week.
It is a region transformed into one of the
'largest prisons of the world', commented a
Kashmiri, who returned home after a month's
overseas visit. “My fears of Kashmir having
been brought under total siege came true as
some cab drivers at Srinagar airport refused
to take me home,” he said adding that he was
lucky that a friend offered him lift.
For several consecutive days Kashmir's roads
wore a deserted look and except for army,
paramilitaries and police no one is seen.
By fencing Srinagar, the rulers and their
puppet administration have made themselves
into a laughing stock as people question the
wisdom of using it as a means of obstruction
in protests. “The fencing will stand there as
long as curfew is there”, commented an elderly
Khwaja Ali Muhammad Dar of Raj Bagh.
At several places, they did not even allow
Nimaz (prayers) in mosques leading to further
deepening of the anger among the people. The
deployed forces have been denying permission
to medics and paramedics to move to their
hospitals in ambulances.
Curfew Victims Recount Troops’ Terror
In occupied Kashmir, the injured persons in
Srinagar hospital have said that Indian troops
fired upon them without any provocation. "We
were shot from a point blank range," victims,
who sustained bullet injuries in different
parts of the valley, said.
The injured persons pointed out that they were
sitting on roadside at Hajin in the north
Kashmir when the troopers without any
provocation started firing at them from a
point blank range. The firing killed some
persons on the spot and left many of others
critically injured, they said.
Fayaz Ahmad of Nayoora, Pulwama district, a
victim of the firing said, "We were peacefully
protesting in the area but Army and CRPF
troopers fired several teargas shells at us
and after shelling they started indiscriminate
firing on us.”
Another wounded person from Hajin said that
the troopers barged into several houses in the
area to stop them from defying curfew. "They
ruthlessly beat up civilians, including women
and children, and also smashed window panes of
dozens of houses," said Ishfaq Ahmad Beg of
Hajin, adding, "Following this, they resorted
to firing which left dozens of us injured.”
In occupied Kashmir, as the Indian troops
continued to impose curfew in letter and
spirit in the Kashmir Valley for the fourth
consecutive day, on Wednesday, the people of
valley are facing acute shortage of the
essential commodities, as they are not being
allowed to come out of their homes.
A woman from Bapora in Shopian district died
after the police and paramilitary CRPF
troopers didn't permit her family to take her
to Lal Ded Hospital.
“Our kids are starving. No relaxation in
curfew has made our life miserable,” a woman
told media me over phone.
Reeling under curfew for the fourth day
straight, people in the Kashmir Valley are
faced with acute shortage of food and other
essentials. The residents of summer capital
Srinagar, which depends on supplies,
particularly milk and other dairy products
mainly traded in from rural areas of the
Valley or neighbouring Punjab and elsewhere,
bear the brunt of the restrictions.
Meanwhile, paramilitary CRPF troopers
prevented a team of foreign journalists from
distributing juice at Dalgate in Srinagar,
witnesses said. The group of journalists told
troops, "Do you want people to die of
starvation?" And pat came the reply: "Yes".
Irked by the troopers' behaviour, the
journalists visited the police station Ram
Munshibagh, hoping that the concerned Station
House Officer might help them somehow. But he
too refused any help, the journalists said.
"In no place in the world is such a harsh and
brutal curfew imposed," said a journalist to
the trooper.
For the 4th consecutive day the local
newspapers could not hit the stands and
hawkers too have stopped circulating Indian
newspapers. Due to severe curfew restrictions
the reporters and other staff was not able to
reach the newspaper offices.
On the other hand, two flights from Indian
capital New Delhi were diverted as no flight
was allowed to land amid imposition of tight
curfew as the airport staff was not allowed to
come out from their residences. |
