International Symposium On Democracy In Africa Concludes

African Regional News Updates

25 May 2009

Shabait, Asmara — The International Symposium on Democracy in Africa: Reality and Prospects which was held at the Asmara Palace Hotel here in the capital concluded today adopting declaration

In the three-day symposium in which a number of intellectuals and researchers from Africa, Canada, the United States and others participated, over 35 study papers were presented on the history and origin of democracy in Africa, western democracy and its negative impact on African societies, the double standard nature of western democracy and the like were presented.

Speaking at the symposium, Mr. Abdalla Jabir, Head of Organizational Affairs at the PFDJ, explained that the end of socialist economy and liberalism has not only exposed the world population in general and that of Africa, Latin America and Asia in particular but also brought about misery to them. If at all justice, prosperity and freedom are to prevail in these continents, it is imperative that they should deeply scrutinize their experience and apply democracy in a manner that benefits their respective peoples.

According to the study papers presented at the symposium, the adoption of copied or imposed western democracy represents a dangerous move leading to conflict and poverty in the countries of Africa and Asia.

It is to be recalled that in a speech he delivered at the opening session, President Isaias Afwerki explained that it is distressing to see the national resources of a given country being exploited and monopolized by a handful individuals in the name of democracy on the one hand, and citizens being deprived of opportunities and resources of their country on the other. He further underlined that if real democracy is to prevail at all, there should exist equitable allocation of resources and the rights of the people respected. -- Shabait
