20 May 2009 Endemic incidents of illegal arrests
and atrocities continue being committed by AFP against
civilian communities continue since the Government of
the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) launched
military campaign August last year against the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and constituencies.
Three innocent Muslim civilians identified as
Nasruddin Guiamalon, Talekop Guiamalon and Tong Baman
were arrested illegally by elements of 40th Infantry
Battalion, Philippine Army, Armed Forces of the
Philippines (AFP) early morning yesterday.
The innocent victims were arrested by the government
soldier without due warrants at their community at
Barangay Nabalawag in Midsayap, Cotabato.
Accordingly, victims were brought to the command post
of 40th IB in Midsayap. Families of the victims still
have no idea why Nasruddin, Talekop and Tong were
arrested.
No formal charges were filed against the three
persons.
MILF gathered information marked yesterday as the
month-long implementation of AFP Oplan No Mans Land:
Search and Destroy. This Oplan took off last April 18,
2009 in Maguindanao and part Cotabato Province with
the aim in view of destroying all MILF forces and
clearing the presence in the two provinces.
However, given the circumstance that the MILF forces
had not been holding permanent grounds in the
provinces since October last year, innocent civilians
are severely affected by the AFP operations that
totally showcased blatant violations to laws on war /
armed conflict and human rights.
Other cases of recent illegal arrests, to cite out of
many, by AFP were recorded last August 21, 2009
against certain Benny Lagilay, civilian, by elements
of 69th Infantry Battalion at around 1030am at
Barangay Tuka, Mamasapano. Benny was rushing up saving
their household valuables, which he hardly earned
during his overseas employment, when arrested by the
government military. On the same day, Mamaged Alabat
and Kamaro Abedin were the other victims of arbitrary
arrests by government soldiers that took place at
barangay Ganta Datu Piang, Maguindanao.
Meanwhile, last May 11, 2009, several civilian drivers
of motorcycles were apprehended by AFP troops at
Barangay Pagatin, Datu Saudi Ampatuan. Their hairs
were shaved off against their will by the government
soldiers and, after which, accordingly, the crucifix
insignia were printed by the AFP troops on their heads
as if they were being force baptized with another
religion.
Several evacuees’ tents were dismantled by AFP troops
at Pagatin, Datu Saudi Ampataun, Maguindanao, leaving
the IDPs no place to stay, especially during the long
hours of dark night.
