Eritrea Promises Persistent And Constructive Efforts To Promote Peace And Stability

Shabait.com (Asmara) — Reiterating the Eritrean government's independent political stance, President Isaias Afwerki asserted that Eritrea would not only condemn any illegal actions in the region but also continue its persistent and constructive efforts to promote regional peace and stability. The President made the salient remarks in briefings he gave regarding political developments in this region and the world, during the Meeting of the Eritrean Cabinet of Ministers, Regional Administrators and Operation Zone Commanders that concluded today at the Denden Hall here in the capital. The meeting began its session with briefings by President Isaias highlighting the national agricultural development and agro-industry plan. Following assessment of the implementation of the national development strategy and the progress of action plans for the first quarter of 2009, as well as the accomplishments so far registered, the meeting mapped out future work plan. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, also gave briefings regarding action plans and advance preparations for the rainy season. In this respect, he explained that the Azmera rains this year were well below that of the previous year, and reminded the administrative regions to concentrate more on those reliable areas already identified and the ones in which the water resource potentials and infrastructure facilities are well in place. To this end, the Minister stressed that more emphasis should be given to the task of raising productivity. He further indicated that select seeds have been made ready for the realization of the set objective. In recognition of the fact that there should not prevail undue reliance on weather forecast information obtained from other international and regional meteorological agencies, the meeting underlined the urgency of establishing a viable National Meteorological Agency, as well as weather monitoring stations and information centers in all regions of the country. In this connection, the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regional Administrators and Operation Zone Commanders agreed on the need for introducing the necessary technology that would enable prompt gathering and analyzing data. Moreover, it held extensive deliberations on the study undertaken as regards employing sophisticated satellite technology in the Southern region, the scope and quality of farmland, the preparations already made for this year's rainy season, the progress made in the construction of micro-dams and water diversion schemes, the potable water supply provision in villages and urban centers, the putting in place of the necessary agro-industrial pre-requisites as well as the budget required. The meeting further assessed the finalization of construction and repair of the already existing agricultural infrastructure, the progress registered and its dependability for the upcoming rainy season in the Gash-Barka region. It also discussed the tasks undertaken as regards the allotment and re-distribution of farmlands in the region. Besides, the meeting closely reviewed the accomplishments registered on the part of major agricultural projects in Gash-Barka concerning the preparations already made, including that of water diversion schemes and related activities, coupled with the land areas envisaged for rain and drip-fed irrigation, in addition to the agricultural and pre-industrial processes. The meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regional Administrators and Operation Zone Commanders further conducted in-depth discussion on the detailed information compiled in the Central region regarding the tasks accomplished as regards farm plots readied for cultivation on the basis of integrated technology at governmental and individual level, as well as the plots already ploughed through employing traditional means, coupled with soil and water conservation activities in those areas fit for the cultivation of strategic crops, in addition to the activities connected with the distribution of natural fertilizer to villages and the condition of micro-dams in the region. Furthermore, it reviewed the works accomplished pertaining to the leveling and distribution of land and the construction of water diversion schemes, as well as the initiatives taken in the processing and distribution of fish products in the Northern Red Sea region. Likewise, after assessing the tasks undertaken in the Southern Red Sea region towards making the fisheries sector live up to expectations in reinforcing endeavors aimed at ensuring food security, the meeting decided that concerted endeavors be made, and thus enhance the supply and distribution of fish products to the general public, taking into account the growing demand and consumption.
