Hundreds Attend Burial Of Late Tanzanian Mufti Sheikh Gorogosi's Burial
30 June 2009
The late acting Tanzania Mufti, Sheikh Suleiman Gorogosi, who died in car accident on Saturday, was buried in Lindi yesterday.
Vice President Dr Ali Mohammed Shein led thousands of mourners who bade farewell to the late Sheikh in Bomolea suburb, Mikumbi Ward, Lindi town.
Sheikh Gorogosi, who was also the Lindi regional Chief Shjeikh until his death, died at Mnolela Village in Lindi District after a car he was driving overturned.
Before his burial, Sheikh Gorogosi's body was taken to Mikumbi mosque for prayers, which were attended by Government and political leaders.
Other prominent figures who attended the burial are sheikhs from Lindi and Dar es Salaam, and chairman of the IPP Group of Companies, Mr Reginald Mengi.
Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda yesterday sent a condolence message to the Gorogosi family.
In his message on behalf of the Government, Mr Pinda said he was shocked by Sheikh Gorogosi's sudden death.
Mr Pinda described the deceased as an "important bridge between Muslims and the Government and between Muslims and Christians as well as people of other denominations".
"He was a religious leader who lived by example and he will be remembered for his great contribution to the development of the nation," he said.
"On behalf of the President, I offer my condolences to the family of the deceased, Muslims, the Bakwata and all Tanzanians," Mr Pinda said.
The Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) said in a statement Sheikh Gorogosi would be remembered for treating people equally, regardless of their religious affiliations.
The statement signed by TAC President, Jude Thaddaeaus Ruwa'ichi, said the late religious leader was always ready to cooperate with TEC on social issues.
The deceased was a close aide to the Chief Sheikh, Shaaban Simba who, due to ill health previously had entrusted him to undertake important functions in running the Muslim Council of Tanzania (Bakwata).
Sheikh Simba has just returned from abroad where he had gone to seek medical treatment.
The Imams Committee described Sheikh Gorogosi as "illustrious" leader who would be difficult to replace.
