Iran Results Unchanged in First Recount: Khamenei Slams West's "Idiotic Remarks" Over Election
29 June 2009
Iran's electoral body, the Guardians Council, has completed partial recounting of ballot boxes in some cities and the result is unchanged from what was announced a day after the June 12 presidential poll, the Fars news agency said on Monday. The Guardian Council, had offered to recount a random 10% of the votes. But defeated opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi has rejected this, saying the whole election should be annulled. Fars said the recount is complete in Islamshahr and Robat-Karim in the province of Tehran, Karaz, located west of Tehran, Zarhan and Kerman in southern Iran, Babolsar in northern Iran, and Sarbisheh and Nahbandan in the east of the country. Results from the recount in these cities are unchanged from what was officially declared two weeks ago, the news agency added. It said in Zarhan, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had received one extra vote in the recounting, defeated candidates Mousavi saw his tally recede by two votes, Mehdi Karroubi lost one vote, while that of Mohsen Rezai was unchanged. The Guardians Council is recounting 10 percent of the total ballot boxes after defeated candidates alleged that Ahmadinejad's declared victory in the presidential poll was due to "rigged" voting. The electoral watchdog has said it would announce final results of the recount later on Monday. Official results after the election gave Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a majority of 63%, a gap of 11 million votes, against Mousavi who took 34 percent of the vote. Khamenei Slams West's "Idiotic Remarks" over Election Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei lashed out at the West on Sunday for "idiotic remarks" over the presidential election. "Some European and American officials with their idiotic comments about Iran are speaking as if all their own problems have been resolved and Iran remains the only issue for them," his eminence was quoted by the Iranian State Television as saying at a meeting with judicial officials. "They ignore the fact that the Iranian people believe that wherever they (Western leaders) step politically, that spot becomes soiled," Khamenei said.
