Occupation Of Kashmir Is Manifestation Of India Racism: Free Kashmiris
18 June 2009
Geneva, June 18 (KMS): The Chairman of the IHRAM and Kashmir Centre EU, Barrister Abdul Majid Tramboo has said that India’s occupation of Jammu and Kashmir was a clear manifestation of racism. He was addressing the 11th session of the Human Rights Council at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Following is the text of the statement delivered by him: This NGO agrees with the comments of the Special Rapporteur in paragraph 12 of his recent report 11/36 where it is stated that “many of the provisions contained in the outcome document of the Durban Review Conference would not have been needed had the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action been properly and effectively implemented”. This NGO watched with dismay as political infighting and grandstanding at the Durban Review Conference resulted in many of the positive measures outlined in the outcome document being overlooked by the international media. Drawing attention to paragraph five of the Durban Review Conference outcome document which: Emphasizes the need to address with greater resolve and political will all forms and manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, in all spheres of life and in all parts of the world, including all those under foreign occupation. This NGO would like to know what steps can be taken by the International Community and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to put and end to the practice of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance that is suffered by those under occupation. Drawing on the earlier quote from the Special Rapporteur we would hope that paragraph 5 of the outcome document will be properly and effectively implemented and ask what steps civil society can take in order to facilitate this. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are now officially subject to the longest territorial military dispute in modern history and have had UN peacekeepers (UNMOGIP) there since 1949, some 60 years. Suffering daily human rights abuses at the hands of the Indian Military and Para-Military forces stationed there, racism by these forces is commonplace. The people of Kashmir are denied access to the decision-making processes unless a political candidate swears allegiance to the state of India and are therefore denied their right to self-determination and representation. This NGO asks the Special Rapporteur to pay particular attention to the case of Kashmir as it can be seen as the most ugly face of racism. Torture, disappearance, extra judicial execution, arbitrary arrest and detention are all commonplace and carried out with impunity. » India Restrictions On Kashmiris’ Movement Denounced The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly denounced the restrictions imposed by the authorities on the movement of the people of occupied Kashmir during Indian Vice President’s visit to Srinagar. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement issued in Srinagar deplored that on one hand, the authorities were forcibly organising their functions while on the other, disallowing public gatherings. He said that such tactics could not break the resolve of Kashmiri people to continue their struggle for right to self-determination. Complete shutdown, marked with anti-India demonstrations continued in Shopian for the 22nd consecutive day, today, against the rape and murder of two Kashmiri women. Dozens of persons including women were injured when Indian troops resorted to heavy lathi charge and excessive teargas shelling to disperse the protesters. The troops also damaged several residential houses. The APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chief, Muhammad Yasin Malik remained under house arrest, today. »
