Kashmiri Teenage Girl Aasiya Never Returned Home After Maiden Visit
22 June 2009
Srinagar (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, Aasiya a teenage girl raped and murdered by the Indian troopers, had never ever visited her orchard before the fateful day of May, 30 and it was her maiden visit after her sister in law Neelofar requested her to accompany her. Nighat, Aasiya’s elder sister, recalling the fateful day with a choked voice, said that Aasiya after returning from school as usual took the meals and was then preparing to offer Asr prayers. “Her sister in law, requested her to accompany her to the orchard, which she obliged,” she added. She said that Neelofar only used to visit the orchard when her husband, Shakeel Ahmad Ahangar or other family members accompanied her. “But since Shakeel was not at home, she decided to take Aasiya along. So, both of them left at 6:00 PM, never to return,” Nighat said. Despite being only a Kilometre and a half away, Aasiya's family members said that Aasiya had never visited the orchard before as it had been more than two years that they had bought that orchard. They said that Aasiya was brought up by her elder brother Shakeel Ahmad after her father passed away in the year 1999. “She was dear to everyone in her family and they provided her every support to fulfil her dreams becoming an engineer and later to go for civil services,” they said. “ She was more concerned about her studies and very few people in the neighbor- hood knew her,” said one of the neighbours Abdul Rasheed. Her teachers in the Green Land Public school where from she underwent her schooling right from the Nursery Class described her as the most brilliant student in the entire school who was quite friendly with all the teachers. “Unlike other girls she had opted for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with environmental sciences an optional subject and had aimed to go for engineering and there-after civil services. After securing 82 percent marks in the matriculation she was not satisfied with her performance and had vowed to get 1st position in the 12th exam,” said Kousar Jan one of her teachers in the school. »
