Prime Minister Hariri Will Not Back Away From Forming A New Government
29 June 2009
Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri will conduct Monday parliamentary consultations over the formation of the next government, a process that could take days or weeks to conclude, according to As-Safir newspaper. “Hariri will begin consultations with all parliamentary blocs based on the commitment to a national unity government in which all main blocs are represented and which is harmonious, functional and free of obstruction and paralysis,” the paper quoted a source close to the Almustaqbal bloc. Future Movement leader Saad Hariri, who was appointed via a decree signed by President Michel Sleiman for the post of prime minister on Saturday, was nominated by 86 lawmakers out of 127. The source said that Hariri rejects the issue of the obstructing third, which used to derive its authority from the opposition’s allegations that the majority was a delusional one. The motive has fallen, now that the legislative elections proved the triumph of the majority. The source said that Hariri was ready to discuss the concerns of the opposition and provide guarantees and assurances suitable for it without giving them the ability to obstruct. Hariri would not back away from forming the new government no matter what the difficulties were, they said. In preparation for Monday's consultations, Hariri paid on Sunday a series of visits to former prime ministers including Amin el-Hafez, Rashid el-Soloh, Salim el-Hoss, General Michel Aoun, Omar Karami, Najib Mikati, and current caretaker Premier MP Fouad Siniora. Hariri expressed his willingness to form a national government to save the country from the crises and difficulties, emphasizing his eagerness to open a new page, the paper concluded.
