PM Hariri Open To Overcome The Pitfalls In The Formation Of New Government
30 June 2009
Prime Minister-designate MP Saad Hariri starts his consultations with the parliamentary blocs on Monday at the Nejmeh Square, after he finished yesterday his conventional visits to former Prime Ministers under the banner of “getting over division in the country and opening a new page” as he declared after meeting with PM Siniora. Despite the intersection of the opposition leaders in stressing on the unity of position, and ‘waiting’ for what the PM-designate would provide about his vision to form the government, the clarity and transparency of Hariri in addressing the Lebanese about the ‘labor of formation’, was responded by positive political signals, specifically from the group which did not name him during the consultations. Leader of the Loyalty to Resistance bloc MP Mohammed Raad had a prominent position saying that: “who takes a step towards building a strong Lebanon will be responded with three steps.” Israeli Danger On the other hand, the Israeli comment to designating Hariri came as a threat, where the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that “if Hizbullah joined the upcoming government, Israel will hold Lebanon responsible for any arm action by Hizbullah against Israel.” This highlights the need to fortify the domestic arena, and emphasizes the risks that PM-designate spoke of during his speech of designation. In this context, Speaker Nabih Berry assured that “talking about the enemy represented by Israel became common between all leaders”, asking: “are we ready for a new mentality and rejecting domination, hegemony, monopoly and privatization and consequently transiting from an era of power to the era of State?”. Flexibility… and openness The first day for the PM-designate started early, where he visited President Amin Hafez in Hotel Dieu Hospital and inquired about his health, then met President Rashid Al-Solh and President Salim Al-Hoss who wished Hariri success and “forming the government as soon as possible.” Hariri also met MP Michel Aoun without giving a declaration after his meeting, describing it as “good”. Then he visited President Omar Karameh in Beirut, who pointed that “without consensus the government will not be formed.” Hariri continued his tours where he met President Najib Mikati at his residence in Beirut who called for “facilitating the mission of the PM-designate and giving the national partnership its positive meaning.” He concluded his tour with a meeting with PM Siniora who expressed the necessity of “flexibility with stressing on the national principles without abandoning the basic principles.” Hariri decided to draw back from personal lawsuits he filed due to insults and offenses against his person or political path, hoping that all concerned would repair the broken, and meet at re-building the national consensus, to avoid the surrounding risks and taking the available opportunity. Spiritual support Hariri also received support from spiritual figures, where the Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir described the designation of PM Hariri to form the government as “a very good thing”, while the Grand Mufti of the Republic Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Kabbani stressed that “facilitating the mission of Hariri to form the government is a national duty.”
