Philippino AFP Suffer Casualties In Fierce Clashes With MILF In Maguindanao

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) suffered high casualties again during fierce gun battle yesterday with the freedom fighters of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces – Moro Islamic Liberation Front (BIAF – MILF) in Baranagy Muti, Guindulungan, Maguindanao. MILF reports from the field cited 20 plus AFP troops were killed and wounded in action. Three (3) government soldiers were also reportedly missing in action, report said. Troops engaged in the clashes belong to the 46th Infantry Battalion (IB), 64th IB and 75th IB of the Philippine Army, AFP and from 104th, 105th and 106th Base Commands on the side of BIAF – MILF. Firefight between flared up around 12 noon. However, artillery and air strikes by the AFP using two fighter planes, two OV – 10 bomber planes and two attack helicopters started as early as 10am. Heavy exchange of gun fire blazed up from 2pm to 4:30pm. AFP forces were drive out of the area of engagement by the MILF fighters. But civilians see more fierce clashes between the two forces in the area in the succeeding days. MILF forces advanced and maneuvered to close battle range with government forces as heavy artillery and air strikes were being fired by the AFP starting pass 10 o’clock in the morning while AFP ground troops were also moving toward perimeter defense posts of the Camp Omar and Badre of the 104th and 106th Base Commands of the BIAF – MILF. Several RPGs were fired by the MILF forces as they had surrounded the positions of the government troops. The embattled areas are approximately 3 kilometers away from the national highway along municipality of Talayan, Maguindanao. Scores of government military detachments situated along this highway stretch relentlessly fired mortars and artillery, hitting even civilian communities in Barangays Muti, Ahan, Tidtib, Pega, Linyab and Pukol in Guindulungan and Talayan towns in Maguindanao Province. Civilians were evacuating while the war planes and cannons were being fired indiscriminately by the AFP. Reports said civilians are now seeking refuge at evacuation centers and with their relatives. The continuing AFP operations continue to cause the unabated swell on the number of internally displaced persons, which until now still in the hundreds of thousands figure. Five MILF freedom fighters were slightly wounded in the encounter.
