Moro Islamic Liberation Front MILF Calls On Soldiers To Vacate Mosques
13 June 2009
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to let their soldiers vacate the mosques in Maguindanao particularly in the municipality of Datu Piang, saying this act of converting mosques into camps is a complete disregard and disrespect for the religion of Islam and the sensibilities of the Muslims. Sheikh Muhammad Muntassir, chairperson of the MILF committee on da’wah (Islamic call), told www.luwaran.com/net that mosques are sacred places of worship among Muslims and should only be as such not for military camp, detachment or checkpoint. “Using mosques,” he said, “is a grave violation of international humanitarian law,” referring to at least two mosques made camps along the road from Crossing Salbu to Datu Piang town, which is 20 kilometer stretch of road. He asked the AFP to follow the rules of engagement in war even as he said that the MILF is doing everything to Islamize or humanize the war in Mindanao. Fourteen hundred years ago, Islam has already promulgated laws of war; e.g., not to harm or kill non-combatants, not to destroy orchards or plantation, not to destroy homes, churches, foodstuff, etc. He said the more the soldiers show arrogance and disrespect for religion, the more people join the MILF. Report from the town said that the soldiers are everywhere -- in mosques, school buildings or few meters away from school buildings, and houses of civilians. Soldiers of the Army’s 54th Infantry Battalion are the ones deployed here and occupying the mosques. Pastor Reu Montecillo, chairperson of Mindanao People’s Caucus, who visited the town recently, said: “That should not be allowed. The soldiers should be made aware that it is against the law to occupy mosques, churches or chapels.”
