Moro Islamic Liberation MILF Rebuffs Army Spokesman For Distortion Of Facts
17 June 2009
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has rebuffed Lt. Col. Jonathan Ponce, spokesman of the Army 6th Infantry Division, for deliberate distortion of facts when he accused the Front as responsible for the ambush of three Moros at sitio Malibacao, Romongaob, South Upi on June 15. Khaled Musa, deputy chairman of the MILF committee on information, told www.luwaran.com that MILF mujahideen can never undertake the ambush, saying that some if not all of the victims were related to the late Sheikh Abukhalil Yahya (true name: Abdulrahman Campong) who was a senior member of the MILF central committee. He called on Ponce not to engage in cheap propaganda gimmick that can be easily challenged and proven to be false. “Mind you,” he reminded Ponce, “the best propaganda is truth itself.” Yahya, a full blooded Tiruray but had studied Islam at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, was a highly respected ulama (learned in Islam). At one time, he was the chairman of the MILF Supreme Shariah court and had also headed several delegations abroad with other MILF central committee members. The ambush claimed the life of Ismael Atim while those wounded were South Upi Councilor Jordan Ibrahim and two others identified as Kadil Kausin and Samin Ibrahim. The ambush took place 8:20 a.m. Monday while the victims were onboard a yellow land cruiser at Sitio Malibacao, Romongaob village in South Upi. At the time, the victims were on their way to Cotabato City. "The MILF are very desperate and even civilians are now target, and a clear indication that they are going wild. The MILF hierarchy should do something to give disciplinary actions to their erring and abusing field commanders and followers," Ponce said. AFP artillery shelling hit civilians in Maguindanao town The indiscriminate artillery shelling by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) fell into civilian concentrations and evacuation camp in villages in Mamasapano, Maguindanao that hit scores of innocent civilians last night. Three victims were already identified as Sapia Zainal, 10 years old student, Zaid Abas, 20 years old student, and Bayan Tunadzi, 23 years old father. Other victims were still unidentified. Victims had sustained severe wounds in different part of their bodies, a field report said. Accordingly, Sapia and Bayan were brought to Cotabato Regional Medical Center in Cotabato City for medical treatment. Meanwhile, Zaid was yet to be brought to nearest medical center or hospital because accordingly his poor family cannot afford it. Families of victims were appealing for justice and seeking help from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the hospitalization needs. For several minutes after 11pm that the deliberate indiscriminate shelling were fired by the AFP allegedly from Salvo, Datu Piang and a village in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao that hit baranagys Libutan and Linantangan, Mamasapano. The artillery strikes that hit the victims were those that fell near Mahad Libutan, a school turned evacuations center, in Barangay Libutan, Mamasapano, Maguindanao. Deliberate indiscriminate artillery and even air strikes had been perpetrated by AFP since the start of its operations against MILF and Bangsamoro civilians in August last year. Civilian communities and makeshifts for internally displaced persons were not spared from these AFP indiscriminate artillery and air strikes despite the fact that AFP know very well that its strikes were hitting civilian concentrations. Dozens of innocent civilians had been killed and injured as a result of the AFP operations but human rights commission and justice department of the government had never bothered to execute their mandates on this AFP carnage. Tolerating this AFP atrocities and crimes committed with impunity can be equated to more and more and countless victims.
