Survivor Account Of Philippines Brutalities: AFP Indiscriminate Artillery Shelling
28 June 2009
A survivor of the indiscriminate shelling of artillery by the Armed Forces Philippines (AFP) last June 24, 2009 (Wednesday) was in tears in calling for a stop to the war in Mindanao and military operations in Maguindanao that had particularly wreck unspeakable havoc on civilian lives, liberties and properties. She made her appeal when interviewed in television news by ABS-CBN News Team in Central Mindanao yesterday. “The war must stop, civilians had been suffering and we are not safe with the ongoing military operations. We cannot bear this war anymore,” she said in Tagalog. A little pass 8pm, June 24, she said two loud explosions occurred near their house at Barangay Binanga, Talayan, Maguindanao. Later on, she saw the house of her relative shattered. A mortar round from a 105mm howitzer fell few meters away from her relatives’ house. The other fell in their paddy field. Guiaria Enok, her relative, died due to the severe wounds on her head sustained from shrapnels of the artillery round, and Bayan Enok was wounded. While the interview on the survivor was being filmed, an indiscriminate aerial bombing by AFP begun at around 10am in Datu Saudi and Datu Piang in Maguindanao. Areas bombarded included a civilian community in Sitio Dansuli in Datu Saudi. No casualty was reported yet particularly on civilians. Four AFP fighter planes were used for the indiscriminate air strikes that halted late in the afternoon yesterday. This was not the first case of innocent civilians being killed by the indiscriminate artillery and mortar shelling, air strikes by the AFP since it launched military campaign against MILF in august last year. Unfortunately justice had not been served for the innocent victims instead the AFP perpetrators were absolved by government authorities. AFP relentless and indiscriminate artillery strikes rained in and hammered barangays (villages) and civilian communities in the towns of Datu Piang, Datu Saudi Mamasapano, and Talayan all of Maguindanao province from morning to evening last June 24 despite absence of ground encounters with MILF troops. This artillery rampage from AFP detachments in Datu Gumbay, Datu Piang; Salbu, Datu Saudi; Mamasapano and Talayan devastated barangays Gawang, Andavit, Tee, Daganding, Pusaw, Diate, Bagumbong, Bialong, Malingaw, Lapok, Liab, Tukanalipao and Binanga. Family of the victims and MILF are together in calling for the human rights groups and justice institution to conduct immediate investigation on this case of human rights violations, war crime and violation of laws on war by the government of the Republic Philippines and AFP.
