Washington Claims In Favour Of Resumption Of Pakistan-India Dialogue
22 May 2009
Washington, (KMS): The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre Washington, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, while quoting William Burns, the US Under-Secretary of State, has said that the US favours resumption of dialogue between Pakistan and India and wants the Kashmir problem to be solved keeping in view the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai in a statement said that the Kashmir dispute was first brought to the United Nations in 1948, and after the passing of several resolutions of the Security Council, remained one of the longest-unresolved disputes on the UN agenda. “In the official document which was co-sponsored by the United States, it is categorically stated that the final status of the Kashmir will be decided in accordance with the wishes and will of the people,” he added. Dr Fai said that the situation in the occupied territory was deteriorating day by day and Indian troops were massively violating the human rights, adding that the Shopian incident was the latest example of the troops’ brutalities. However, irrespective of the enduring brutality of the occupation forces, Dr. Fai stated that resistance in occupied Kashmir was entirely indigenous, spontaneous and non-violent. “Peaceful, enduring civil agitation is the solution to get rid of Indian rule”, he added. He pointed out that in support of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination increasing number of enlightened Indian academics, scholars and leaders were coming forward to express their disgust at their own government’s policy in Kashmir. He said that it was the time for the Obama administration to develop its positive and principled approach to the Kashmir dispute, saying to do so, it must persuade both Pakistan and India to define the parameters for a composite dialogue to resolve the Kashmir dispute. Dr Fai said that nothing could break the will and determination of the Kashmiri people for their legitimate and undeniable right to self-determination recognized and upheld by the United Nations. »
