Hamas And The West: World Powers Ignored Palestinian People's Democratic Choice
18 June 2009
GAZA, (PIC)-- Dr. Ahmed Bahar, the acting speaker of the Palestinian legislative council, has said that the world community had ignored the results of the Palestinian transparent and honest elections and did not respect the Palestinian people's choice. Bahar, speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with former US president Jimmy Carter in the presence of five other MPs, said that the international community's disrespect was obvious in the quartet committee's oppressive conditions that aborted the entire democratic process. The acting speaker asked Carter to exert utmost efforts at all international platforms to end the oppression befalling the unarmed Palestinian people and to work for the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation jails especially the lawmakers and their speaker Dr. Aziz Dwaik. He said that Israel had escalated its "savage crimes" against the Palestinian people and mounted a large scale offensive on the Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip under the very eyes of the world community and the quartet committee, which did not budge to stop it. MP Yehya Mousa, who attended the meeting, described Carter's visit to the Strip as "important", adding that Carter was trying to help the American administration to rid itself gradually of the quartet committee's conditions for dealing with Hamas. Mousa pointed out that Carter conveyed a number of queries on various issues to the Hamas Movement from the American administration, adding that Hamas would study those issues and inform the former president with its detailed responses.
