The Arab League Castigates Israel For Minister's Tour Of Aqsa Mosque
30 June 2009
CAIRO -- Amr Mousa, the Arab League Secretary General, has castigated the Israeli government and strongly denounced its internal security minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch for touring the Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem. He said in a press statement on Tuesday that the Israeli government groups a number of "irresponsible" figures that embark on provocative steps, which he described as "childish". Such practices would never affect Jerusalem's Islamic status and its position as the capital of the Palestinian state, Mousa elaborated. The Arab League chief said that the Israeli settlement activity would top the agenda of the forthcoming Arab foreign ministers' meeting and would be also on the agenda of the Euro-Arab conference in Italy within the coming two days. Minister's storming of Aqsa encourages Zionists to desecrate the holy site Israeli internal security ministry Yitzhak Aharonovitch's tour of the Aqsa Mosque's plazas in occupied Jerusalem encourages Zionist settlers to escalate their desecration of the holy site, Hamas MP Ahmed Abu Halabia charged. He said in a press release on Tuesday that the step was a clear message to the entire world that Israel considers Jerusalem as its capital and acts on that basis. The MP said that Israel does not recognize the holy shrines of Muslims or Christians, recalling that the Israeli army had declared a number of areas inside the Aqsa Mosque closed military zones. He expressed concern that the step might escalate into dividing the holy site similar to what happened to the Ibrahimi Mosque in Al-Khalil. Abu Halabia asked the Palestinian leadership and people to stand united in face of such attempts, and urged Arab and Muslims to rise to the level of the dangers engulfing occupied Jerusalem and to organize protests in a bid to check those dangers. Israel is not legally entitled to sell confiscated Arab land Arab MP in the Israeli parliament Mohammed Baraka has said that there is no legal or ethical right for Israel to sell confiscated Arab lands. He said in a press statement on Wednesday that the lands were arbitrarily confiscated from their Palestinian rightful owners in the fifties, sixties and seventies of the past century. The lawmaker noted that laws were enacted to accelerate this confiscation at different pretexts, but which are all rejected. Israel is trying to invest those lands through offering them for sale to real estate companies and senior capitalists, which only aggravates the "crime", Baraka warned. He explained that selling those lands in this way would deprive the Palestinian municipalities of expanding their area of influence.
