No End To Massacres In Occupied Kashmir: Freedom Struggle Momentum

Srinagar, (KMS): Having started from July 13, 1931, there is no end to massacres in occupied Kashmir till now while the frequency has increased from early 90s after the freedom struggle has got momentum. The accounts of eyewitnesses carried by media directly held Indian troops responsible for most of the bloodshed. Some of these include the massacres at Gawkadal, Basant Bagh,Tengpora, Zakoora, Islamia College, Chota Bazar, Mashali Mohalla, Safnagri, Neelora, Hangabuch, Bijbehara, Kupwara, Handwara and a number of other places. The puppet administration after almost every massacre tried to justify the killings of innocent Kashmiris on the grounds that the incidents occurred due to cross firing. The statements of eyewitnesses and the injured described the version of the administration as incorrect. Members of minority communities were targeted at Wandhama, Chattisinghpora, Sangrama and Nadimarg. An account of massacres in 1990 as reported in media revealed that on January 15, 17 civilians including a women were killed in troops’ firing at Handwara. Basant Bagh and Gawkadal was blood washed when Indian troops opened fire on thousands of protestors, killing 55 people on January 21. On January 25, 26 civilians were shot dead in Handwara and Kupwara by the occupation forces as they opened fire on a peaceful demonstration heading to submit memorandum to the United Nations’ Military Observer Group at Sonawar. In another incident troops killed 21 people at Tengpora and 26 at Zakoora areas of Srinagar on March 1. On May 21, Indian police opened fire on the funeral procession of late Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq near Islamia College, Srinagar killing 70 people. On August 10, to quill the peaceful demonstrations, the troops martyred 25 persons during firing. In the markets of Handwara and Kupwara, 20 people were killed in occupation forces' firing on October 1. In the year 1991, 97 Kashmiris were killed by Indian troops in the valley in Magarmal Bagh, Kupwara, Khanyar, Chotta Bazaar, Srinagar and Pulwama. The year 1992 witnessed 51 Kashmiri martyrs in the hands of Indian troopers in Handwara and other parts of the occupied territory. On the other hand, in 1993, 115 civilians were killed, 200 were inured while 37 residential and 35 commercial structures were set ablaze by the troops at Baramulla, Hangalbuch and Bijbehera. 30 Kashmiris were martyrs by the troopers in the year 1994 in Aadipora and Sangrama areas of Baramulla and Bandipora. On September 19, 1997, a number of villagers were killed in shelling by the troops in Arin, Baramulla. In the year 1998, 88 innocent people were killed in Wandhama village of Ganderbal, Qazigund, Chattisinghpora and Tangdhar areas. On March 24, 2003 at Nadimarg village of Pulwama, 24 Kashmiri Pandits including 11 women and two children were killed by unidentified gunmen. In 2004 April 5, seven persons were killed at Pahalgam in Islamabad. On August 11, 2008, 18 people were killed in firing by the troops across the occupied territory during Amarnath land row controversy. » ‘Struggle for right to self-determination to continue’ In occupied Kashmir, the forum patronised by senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, while paying rich tributes to the martyrs of 1931, reiterated its resolve to strive for the right to self-determination. The spokesman of the forum in a statement issued in Srinagar said that the dream of 1931 martyrs was yet to be realised. “We will continue to sacrifice for the movement until we achieve our goal of right to self-determination, he added. Condemning the imposition of undeclared curfew, the spokesman said, “Nothing can dilute the resolve of masses. It is sheer frustration on part of India to believe that force and coercion can demoralise the sentiment and aspirations of people.” He said that the sacrifices of masses would never go waste but would bring positive results, adding that the day was not far away when the people of Kashmir would get rid of Indian bondage. He also condemned the arrest of Hurriyet leaders and activists. The spokesman said that martyrs of 1931 pierced the dark night of slavery and made it possible for people to raise voice against the oppression. “People proved in 1931 that they can no more be tamed as slaves by any oppressor”, he added.
