Damascus Promises Paris: Government Formation In Lebanon Without Obstructing Third
5 July 2009
A diplomatic source pointed on Sunday that Syrian President Bachar al-Assad assured Secretary General of the French Presidency Claude Gyan that Syria’s allies in Lebanon will facilitate the government formation without the utility of the blocking third. Last Tuesday, Secretary Gyan and diplomatic advisor Jean David Levet visited al-Assad to discuss government formation in Lebanon among other regional political developments. The source indicated that talks about alleged US pressures on Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri not to visit Damascus “are not in harmony with the fact that Washington prepares to delegate a new ambassador to Damascus.” “Rumors on a probable visit made by Hariri to Damascus are untrue,” stressed the source. Lebanese to form a government ‘made in Lebanon’ Fares Souaid, General Coordinator of the March 14 coalition said Sunday, the Lebanese are required to show their ability in forming a new government ‘made in Lebanon’ in coordination with President Michel Sleiman. In a televised interview with the Almustaqbal news, Souaid said: “Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri was assigned as a result of the triumph of the March 14 alliance in the legislative elections. As a result, the Lebanese must show their ability to form a government made in Lebanon in joint efforts with President Sleiman. “Syria made an effort to show the Arab world and the international community that there is inter Lebanese division, in addition to its ability to dominate Lebanon again,” Souaid said. “Inter Lebanese conflict is only solved through constitutional institutions and dialogue. Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri is the one to deal with the Syrian-Lebanese relations issue and other relevant ones,” he said. Souaid added: “March 14 have an obligation to prove to the Lebanese, the Arab and international opinion its ability to tackle controversial issues including the Lebanese-Syrian one. PM Saad Hariri will have to approach this thorny issue even if he had to cooperate with Syrian officials. “PM Hariri is not only a national Lebanese leader, but the Prime Minister of Lebanon who cannot turn his back on issues that have been pending since the year 2005 until now.”
