Obama’s Gesture To Speed Syria Sanction Exemption Process
29 July 2009
President Barack Obama's administration has made a first gesture towards relieving the pressure of economic sanctions against Syria, a spokesman at the White House said Monday. During meetings Sunday with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Obama's Middle East envoy George Mitchell told his host that the US government would try to speed up the process by which exemptions to sanctions can be obtained. "Mitchell explained to President Assad that the US would process all eligible applications for export licenses to Syria as quickly as possible," said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor. He added that particular attention would be paid to speeding up the process for "those requests to export products related to information technology and telecommunication equipment and parts and components related to the safety of civil aviation." But he stressed that "there has been no change" to the existing sanctions against Syria, imposed in 2003. "Changes to US sanctions would require close coordination and consultation with Congress," he said. The US sanctions regime against Syria allows some US companies to seek and receive waivers to export their products to the country. The gesture comes as the Obama administration tries to improve its relations with the regime in Syria, which is closely allied with Iran's Islamic regime and has had rocky relations with the United States for some time. On June 24, the United States announced it would return an ambassador to Syria for the first time in four years. Mitchell was in Syria for talks with Assad on ways of achieving a comprehensive peace in the region between Arabs and Israelis, as well as how relations between the United States and Syria can be improved.
