Suspect In Philippins Terroristic Blast In Cotabato City Arrested
6 July 2009
Government law enforcers arrested one suspect in the deadly bomb blast that rocked Cotabato City yesterday morning. Cotabato City Mayor Datu Muslimin Sema, in an interview with ABS-CBN giant media outfit, identified the suspect as certain Rico Torres Abueva, who was arrested after witnesses identified him as the one who left the package that exploded near small store. The arrested suspect, when interrogated, claimed he is a resident of Maguindanao provice, Mayor Sema confided. But Sema said Rico may not be telling the truth of his identity as he is not familiar with Maguindanao, where he claimed to be native of. Five innocent people were killed by the terroristic blast that happened around 830am. More than 40 innocent people were also wounded including six military personnel. Big bang explosion erupted while the Catholic faithful were in the midst of homily for the Sunday mass. The explosion was approximately 30 meters to 40 meters away from the gate of the Cotabato Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral, which is also fronting McDonald fast food and Central Bank in Cotabato City. Catholic Church expressed condemnation of the bomb blast even as it appealed to stop terroristic acts and spare religious symbols from attacks. Mayor Sema assailed, as well, the bomb explosion as “dastardly and cowardly act,” even as he appealed not to immediately construe the blast as attack on the Catholic congregation in order to avoid inflaming the Christian brethren. “We hope that with the arrested suspect, local authorities can identify and immediately bring to justice the perpetrators of the dastardly act,” Sema said. Speculations were mounting form among the people to include that the target was a military convoy which at the time passed by the area where the explosion erupted, the mayor cited. Sema, however, emphasized not to dignify speculations in order not to muddle the efforts and focus of the law enforcers. AFP Spokesperson Col Ponce of the 6th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, was quick to accuse the MILF Special Operations Group as culprit behind the bombing. Eid Kabalu, MILF Chief for Civil Military Affairs and BIAF Spokesperson, for his part, assailed the accusation of the AFP as baseless and malicious. Kabalu clarified that the MILF had nothing to do with the terroristic explosion, adding that the MILF has no Special Operations Group (SOG).
