Internally Displaced People In Moro Still Struggling To Survive
16 July 2009
Information gathered cited that the thousands of internally displaced person (IDPs) in the province of Maguindanao voiced out concerns while struggling to survive their appalling situation at deplorable evacuation centers and makeshifts. There are still more than 300,000 IDPs in Maguindanao province alone whose hopes for normalization of situation are slipping in desperation. Poor IDPs in Datu Piang and Datu Saudi municipalities in Maguindanao had been exhausting means like producing – selling mats to earn but still not enough to cope for daily subsistence. The suspension of the food distribution by United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP) last week due to security issues, accordingly, created anxiety amongst IDPs which at the time had pointed out being beset by shortage of food supply. Admittedly security situation in the wake of recent spate of kidnappings and bombings in Mindanao remain a serious issue that can hamper delivery of humanitarian and aid assistance for IDPs. However, today, UNWFP will resume operations following the lifting of suspension of ban to travel for its personnel. UNWFP food aid is big help for the survival of IDPs, whose lives, abodes, properties and means of livelihood had been ruined due to resurgence of hostilities between government and MILF forces brought about by the no let up military option taken by the government since August lat year. Strong appeals for immediate cessation of hostilities continue from various sectors so that IDPs can return to places of origin, start rebuilding their homes and for reconstruction program of the war-ravaged communities can take place. Lifting of stringent restrictions and food blockade being imposed by government forces that affected the works of humanitarian, media and donor communities as well as civil society groups is also a must in order to quell the prevailing humanitarian disaster and emergency. Meanwhile, IDPs expressed gratitude to Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the continuing humanitarian aid in Maguindanao. In various text messages received, IDPs appealed to put an end to the fighting before the advent of the Holy Month of Ramadhan by the third of week of August, even as they lamented that for the past years government military operations stepped up during the month of Ramadhan while the Muslims were observing their fasting. Firefight erupt anew in Guindulungan, Maguindanao Firefight flared up anew between the freedom fighters of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and occupation Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at the embattled Barangay Meta in Upper Guindulungan, Maguindanao this morning. Gun battle started as MILF guerilla units fired at advancing AFP troops toward upper grounds of Meta. Firefight lasted for almost an hour as both forces disengaged from fighting. No casualty was reported on either side. Accordingly, the attack by MILF forces at army detachment in nearby barangay Bagan last nioght prompted the foiled AFP attack against MILF guerillas at Meta. Meta, the gateway to MILF Camps Omar and Badre’, was the battleground of scores of heavy clashes between MILF and government forces last month of June. Reports said approximately 50 AFP troops were killed and as many number of wounded in these encounters. At one hand, MILF suffered a dozen of wounded and four killed in action.
