Philippine Development Schemes Alone Will Lead People To Nowhere, MILF Says
18 July 2009
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has clarified that the solution to end conflict in Mindanao is not through development alone; saying people who buy this line is following the government thesis that the cause of the conflict is the poverty of the people. “This is a simplistic view,” said Muhammad Ameen, chairperson of the MILF Secretariat, who was apparently reacting to the statement of an MNLF political officer, Abu Amri Taddik, who said in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer in its July 16 issue that the key to solving the Mindanao conflict and the Abu Sayyaf problem is development. “I am sure Brother Taddik was quoted out of context,” Ameen said, adding that it is unimaginable for a personality of his stature and rank in the MNLF could express such a materialist or secular line. Ameen said that development without spirituality could lead people to nowhere and stressed that the Mindanao problem is a political problem that must be addressed politically. He said development is another name for materialism, which he described as the synonym for greed that knows no bound if not regulated by moral or ethical laws. He said the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) despite their “terroristic” methods is still viewed by many as an ideological group which resorts to kidnapping as their unique way to fight their “enemy”. “If development is what is in the mind of the ASG, then the best way to do this is to fight the government and inflict heavy losses and wait for the government to negotiate for a price,” Ameen explained. He cited the cases of Amelil Malagiok of Cotabato, Abulkhair Alonto and Jamil Lucman of Lanao, Sali Wali of Zamboanga, Gerry Salapuddin of Basilan, among so many, who reaped in millions of pesos after surrendering to the government. However, he perfectly agreed with the MNLF political officer that the GRP-MNLF Final Agreement of September 2, 1996 Agreement must be implemented fully. "The government is really at fault why it did not implement the Agreement,” he added. He said the Philippine government through the manipulations of its leaders especially Eduardo Ermita managed to fool around with the agreement for 13 long years since 1996.
