Zionist State Siege Against The Palestinians Takes Gaza Back To The Middle Ages
1 July 2009
BRUSSELS, (PIC)-- Karen Abu Zayd, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) commissioner general, has warned that the 24-month-old Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip was bringing Gaza back to the Middle Ages. Abu Zayd was addressing a conference organized by UNRWA in Brussels over the past couple of days in cooperation with the Belgian foreign ministry and the European Commission on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Agency. Life in Gaza witnesses unprecedented difficult conditions that may not have existed in the Middle Ages, she added. The commissioner general said that there have been neither adequate fuel supplies to Gaza's sole electricity station nor cooking gas supplies since the war ended in January. She charged the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) with banning UNRWA and other humanitarian organizations from assisting thousands of families in reconstructing their destroyed homes. The international official noted that 52,000 houses in Gaza were destroyed while 250,000 refugees were homeless, stressing that the world community is responsible for imposing respect to international laws and doctrines concerning rights of civilians under occupation. Abu Zayd said that smuggling goods via tunnels was averting a total collapse of the humanitarian conditions in the beleaguered Strip. Haneyya gov’t slams Israel for carrying out largest settlement expansion in WB The Palestinian government headed by premier Ismail Haneyya on Tuesday strongly denounced Israel for carrying out the largest expropriation of Palestinian land in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem, saying that these serious Israeli violations are a result of the PA security coordination with Israel. During its weekly meeting, the government urged the Arab and Muslim countries to assume their responsibilities toward the West Bank and Jerusalem and to take serious steps to stop the schemes of settlement expansion. The government also discussed in its meeting a number of political, security and administrative issues especially the files of the national dialog and political arrests in the West Bank and the issue of the Free Gaza boat hijacked by Israel. It stressed that closing the file of political arrests is one of the core issues that reflects the seriousness of Palestinian parties towards the national dialog and its success, adding that this file, if not closed, would remain a constant tension factor. The government warned that there is a trend in the West Bank seeking to sabotage the Egyptian and Arab efforts made to achieve the inter-Palestinian reconciliation through fabricating lies that do not fool a little Palestinian child, but only serve the Israeli occupation’s goals.
