The Mawaddah Center: The Saudi Charity That Saves Many Broken Marriages
10 July 2009
JEDDAH: About half of family disputes that reached Jeddah’s courts last year were resolved by the Mawaddah Center in Jeddah. “According to statistics compiled by the center, it handled 4,179 family disputes out of a total of 10,549 cases that were registered at various courts in the city,” said Anas Zaraah, deputy chairman of the Charity Society for Marriage Assistance and Family Counseling. The Mawaddah Center, which was founded in 2004, is a charitable organization working to settle family disputes amicably. Its branches have been permitted to operate in Jeddah’s General Court and the Marriage Court since 2005. Zaraah said the center’s branch at the General Court was instrumental in reconciling 872 couples and separating 487 couples. It could not resolve 1,134 cases because the parties involved did not come to attend hearings at the center. The Mawaddah branch at the Marriage Court received 2,623 cases out of which 794 were settled and 1,433 couples were divorced. “While 164 cases are under process, 232 families did not appear for hearings,” he said. Experts at the center are of the view that most family disputes were the result of interference by relatives. The other causes of family breakups listed by the center include increasing instances of abuse, wives’ disobedience, diseases that prevent intercourse, aggressive children and mental illness. Extramarital affairs were also listed as causes of family disputes. The center has so far handled 7,900 cases with a 70 percent success rate. The increasing popularity of Mawaddah has prompted 21 district centers in various city neighborhoods to open family dispute settlement committees, said Hassan Al-Zahrani, secretary at the Districts Centers Committee in Jeddah. “Four of these offices are meant exclusively for women,” he said. Al-Zahrani appealed to people, including expatriates, to approach these committees in the event of disputes. “The reconciliation committees are manned by sympathetic people who are helpful,” he added. “Each committee has sufficient numbers of resource persons experienced in handling family issues without involving police and the courts. The staff members are also undergoing training to handle family issues in an effective manner,” he said.
