India Under Pressure To Resolve Kashmir Dispute, Release Leaders
11 August 2009
In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has said that India is facing international pressure, particularly from the US, for resumption of dialogue process to resolve the Kashmir dispute. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while addressing a delegate session of the APHC at Handwara town said that the world had realized that subjugation of the people by force failed to resolve outstanding disputes including Kashmir. “The US, European Union have recognizeed that there is no alternative than to resolve Kashmir and they have conveyed this to India during recent visits of its officials.” he said, adding that farcical elections had failed to dilute the Kashmir issue right from 1947 and it should be solved according to aspirations of Kashmiri people. Mirwaiz maintained that the APHC would continue to strive for dignified and durable resolution of the conflict over Kashmir and had held talks in past with Pakistan and India in this regard. “We were first to put forth the point of trilateral talks. If they would move one step forward, we will move 10,” he added. Expressing concern over the raising graph of human rights violations by Indian troops, Mirwaiz said, it is high time when all the draconian laws like Public Safety Act (PSA), Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) should be revoked and troops be relocated. He said confidence-building measures- like phased demilitarization, revocation of draconian laws, release of political prisoners and free trade from both sides of Kashmir- should be taken to create congenial atmosphere for dialogue. Saying that during the last year’s mass uprising Kashmiris conveyed the message to the world that the ongoing movement was peaceful, the APHC Chairman urged the people to hold Kashmir cause supreme over their personal interests. Praising the role of martyred senior Hurriyet leader, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone, Mirwaiz said he rejected power politics for the cause of Kashmiris. “You should strengthen the hands of APHC leadership to carry forward the mission of your leader,” he said. Earlier, other APHC leaders including Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Fazl Haq Qureshi vowed to continue the mission of martyrs till it reached its logical conclusion. » Amnesty urged to help release Kashmiri leaders Meanwhile, European Union (EU) based prominent Kashmiri leader and President of Advisory Council of Kashmir Centre Brussels, Ali Raza Syed has demanded release of Hurriyet leaders, detained in occupied Kashmir, under draconian Public Safety Act. Ali Raza Syed, in a letter to the Amnesty International, expressed serious concerns over the deteriorating health of pro-freedom leaders during detention. “As illness of some of the leaders is reported in the media, we are worried about their health and Indian will be responsible if anything untoward happened to them in jails,” he added. He said that the authorities had booked the leaders for leading protest marches over the rape and murder of two Kashmiri women in Shopian by Indian troops. Ali Raza Syed demanded of the world community to impress upon India to release the illegally detained pro-freedom leaders including Syed Ali Gilani, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Aasiya Andrabi, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Ghulam Nabi Sumji and Muhammad Yousuf Mir. He also urged the world human rights organisations to help stop rights abuses by the troops in the occupied territory. »
