Israeli War Planes Blast Tunnels: Warning Over Mitchell’s Calls For Normalization With Zionists
11 August 2009
RAFAH, (PIC)-- Israeli F-16 warplanes blasted a number of targets along the Egyptian-Palestinian borders south of Rafah in the Gaza Strip at dawn Monday, security sources said. They told the PIC reporter that at least one missile was fired at a tunnel south of Rafah causing a big explosion and destruction in the area but no casualties were reported. An Israeli army spokeswoman claimed that the raid was in retaliation to the firing of mortar shells and a projectile at western Negev from Gaza. She said that the warplanes targeted a tunnel used for smuggling explosive materials from Egypt into Gaza. Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) on Sunday night rounded up six Palestinians four of them in the district of Jenin including three boys aged 15 and 16. The IOF soldiers also detained a Palestinian boy at the Awarta roadblock south of Nablus after alleging he had a locally made explosive device in his possession. In Qalqilia district, a 22-year-old youth was detained after storming his family home, locals said. IOF soldiers manning Seelat Al-Dhaher road barrier near Jenin on Sunday beat up a Palestinian driver, eyewitness reported, noting that the soldiers smashed the windshield of his vehicle. They added that the driver Khaled Mubarak, 30, was hospitalized because of the severe beating. IOF troops at another roadblock near Nablus unleashed their dogs to search Palestinian vehicles, witnesses said. Hamas officials in jails warn of Mitchell’s calls for normalization with Israel Meanwhile, Hamas lawmakers and ministers imprisoned in Israeli jails warned of US envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell’s statements about the freezing of settlement expansion for one year in exchange for Arab normalization with Israel. In a leaked letter, the Hamas officials underlined that the pressure exerted by the Zionist lobby, which supports the right-wing Israeli government, on US president Barack Obama made him change his tone towards the settlement issue after he used to demand Israel to stop settlement expansion completely. The official also warned that the US plans to hold the Arabs responsible for Israel’s intransigence and thus the failure of the settlement process if they do not normalize relations with it. In another context, Hamas official Hasan Al-Makadema, a prisoner in Israeli jails, said that the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005 was a painful blow to the Zionist expansion project in the region. He added that Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s talk about the mistake Israel committed when it withdrew from Gaza reflected his resentment at the ability of the Palestinian resistance to threaten the security and existence of the occupation state
