Sheikh Sabri Hails Thousands Of Palestinians For Praying In Aqsa
8 September 2009
Sheikh Ikrema Sabri, the preacher of the Aqsa Mosque, on Friday hailed thousands of Palestinians who managed to pray in the Mosque despite the Israeli restrictions imposed on movement of Palestinians in the occupied city of Jerusalem. Sheikh Sabri highlighted in the Khutba (sermon) that the presence of Palestinian worshipers in large numbers in the Aqsa Mosque protects it from the Zionist threats, and urged the Palestinians to frequent the Mosque. The preacher also called on the Arab and Muslim regimes to assume their responsibility towards Palestine especially Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque. About 200,000 Palestinians from Jerusalem and the 1948 occupied lands flocked to the Aqsa Mosque to perform the second Friday prayer in Ramadan amid tight Israeli security measures around the holy city and Mosque. The Israeli occupation forces had imposed before dawn prayers a security cordon around the Aqsa Mosque and the city of Jerusalem especially in the Old City and prevented the Palestinian men from the West Bank under age 50 and women under age 45 from reaching the Mosque. Athan at the Ibrahim Mosque banned by Israeli occupation 59 times last month The Awkaf office in al-Khalil said that the Israeli occupation banned the athan (the Muslim call for prayer) at the Ibrahimi mosque in al-Khalil on 59 occasions last month. The head of the Awkaf in al-Khalil, Zaid al-Ja'bari said that those bans are issued at the pretext that athan disturbs Jewish worshipers, worshiping in parts of the mosque taken over by the occupation. Ja'bari condemned such measures and considered them to be a violation of the sanctity of the mosque and freedom to worship. The Ibrahimi mosque is totally closed for Muslims during Jewish holidays and athan is banned between 50 and 90 times each month. There are five athans each day for five prayers at prescribed times.
